EXPERIMENT 3: THE ARCHITECTURE

PROJECT REACH
STUDENTS

"Algorithms not only calculate structural integrity, but the behaviour of the natural within a timeless context, in order to transform the theoretical into the practical."

In this section, the students have two dedicated sections: Studio and their own meeting room. Whilst interaction with staff is vital to learning, students self-study,reflection time and peer to peer communication is also vital to developing the student's mind.

STUDIO
The Studio is big and open: aimed to cater for as many students as possible who wish to do any task; study, collaborate or relax. This is an area where multiple ideas can be released or problems can be solved together for one of the best ways to study is to collaborate. Again, the big open windows allow natural sunlight and view of the university, also for students below to wonder what ideas could be spawned above. The moving element above allows closure of the roof top for the side panels are made of shaded glass which are also UV coated. Around midday or any situation of a storm, the roof can be covered shielding the glass roof. If more sunlight is desired, the additional roofing can dissolve again.

STUDENT MEETING ROOM
For more private conversations, the student meeting room can be booked to where students can focus solely on group assignments. Writing on the glass is encouraged as this is a room for open discussion for students.

The Student's Hub is dedicated solely to the 100 students to where they can discuss ideas with one another. Whilst university can be seen as solely one's career path, a cohort can further develop an individuals perspective and learning which both spaces encourage.

EXPERIMENT 3: THE ARCHITECTURE

PROJECT REACH
RESEARCH HUB

"Algorithms not only calculate structural integrity, but the behaviour of the natural within a timeless context, in order to transform the theoretical into the practical."

Normally calculations for a civil engineer is concerning the structural integrity of the building, static/dynamic problems (such as distribution of forces, bending moment) and material stress-strains. However, when wanting to design this structure, with the usage of the above theory and inspiration of Gitte Vistnes's "Let Flow the Commuter" I wanted to calculate how the theoretical in coherence with the natural ,can shape the future of architecture. It is the aim of Project Reach to spark curiosity and challenge engineering to further branch out architecture. Hence, it seems fitting that this is the new proposed structure for engineering.

RESEARCH HUB

The RESEARCH HUB consist of the Administrative Office, Research Space for Staff, Meeting Room for Staff, Research Studio. It was the aim for all staff to have their own central space so communication could remain quick and effective without multiple levels. Open spanning windows not only draws natural sunlight but offers views of around the university and as to whether certain staff are nearby or not. It also allows students to easily locate the staff and arrange visits to address any issues concerning the course or studies.

MEETING ROOM FOR STAFF

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE

Communication is important with staff from both General Administration and Research Staff. Whilst each office may be dedicated to one section of staff, they are within the same section of the structure to make communication efficient and easy allocation for students. It also serves as both a planned or immediate meeting place for any order of business whilst providing allocated space for dedicated research as well.

With the Research Hub, Project Reach calculates how the structure flows and interacts with the staff. It is natural for humans to communicate and it is hoped that this segment of the building can further improve this with easy access to one another.

EXPERIMENT 3: 36 TEXTURES

When we were tasked with making two moving elements, we also had 6 key words that would help us understand the movement of the structures. The words set were Linear, Rotational and Scalar. The words I chose were Dynamic, Manoeuvre and Flow as they were words that helped me understand movement and apply to my structure through the Studio's Roof and Elevators. Flow also inspired the overall design of the structure.

EXPERIMENT 3: 18 SKETCH PERSPECTIVES

The sketch perspectives we learnt helped us gain inspiration to what we could potential design for the faculty. Learning these skills were handy and helped me start considering how I could apply my theory to my design; mainly concerning the areas of circulation and flow of the structure. The freedom of choosing how to adapt each rectangle helped me adapt the plans used to construct the faculty.

EXPERIMENT 3: THEORY - PROJECT REACH

I often find it a healthy challenge to be able to construct a balance between architecture and engineering; to provide imaginative insight into the design process whilst manufacturing whilst sustaining practicality.

Algorithms Behaviour Natural Timeless Theoretical

"Algorithms not only calculate structural integrity, but the behaviour of the natural within a timeless context, in order to transform the theoretical into the practical."

Drawn from the Danish.Tm article "Let Flow the Commuters",  the article draws attention to the connection of addresses improving the human experience of travel with human behaviour. Although her designs theoretical, it accounts the calculations of not only the construction of the elements, but the human experienced shaped by such designs.

In relation to my own project, it proposes an innovative design that attempts to shape the direction of architecture, branching out new avenues. Algorithms and calculations are not only placed onto the engineer, but towards the architect in critically thinking about the plan and shape of the structure. The assessment of the project not only should consider the structural integrity but its morality and position within the environment and world as a whole.

EXPERIMENT 3: PROJECT REACH

For Experiment 3, we are tasked to design a new building for the Engineering Faculty to facilitate 100 students awarded scholarships from around the world. As the imaginative Dean of Architecture, it is my duty to develop and propose a new design for UNSW that will support these students education, as well as convey my theory on Architecture.

It is hoped Project REACH can not only educate these 100 students, but inspire innovation towards future generations of students. It is hoped that it's architecture will successfully age into the future through its many design elements and features.

Project REACH aims to stand the test of time and prove its value to the world not only through research and productivity, but both the student's and structure's functionality and flow within UNSW. This project is not only aimed at Engineers but any individual who imagine and dream of their own personal project for the future.

EXPERIMENT 3: THE ARCHITECTURE

PROJECT REACH
MOVING ELEMENTS

Elevator:

Climbing the roots would prove to difficult for it would be a very long climb. Hence, I created spiraling "leaves" which will wrap its way around the roots up to the top. These are in multiple locations (two for the lecture all, one for the gallery/workshop and computer lab).

Roofing:

Sun coverage may change throughout the day, hence a shrinking "shield" will cover the glass roof when there is too much sun or harsher weather.
